Craig Ellwood developed one of the most recognizable architectural languages of Southern California modernism. His houses often appear as simple, elongated rectangular boxes, with flat roofs, glass walls, exposed structural frames, and remarkably restrained detailing.

The Don and Sally Kubly House by Craig Ellwood circa 1965 is a prime example of this. Mr. Kubly was President of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and he picked Ellwood to design his personal residence in the Linda Vista neighborhood. The house has had only one other owner since the Kublys. It’s perfectly situated on a 26,000 square foot lot and surrounded by lush vegetation. It’s now available to purchase.

Geometric clarity. Structural simplicity. The guiding principles of Mies van der Rohe, rendered in redwood and glass. The cantilevered pavilion appears to float effortlessly within its surroundings. Exposed post-and-beam construction. Clean horizontal lines. Expansive walls of glass. A single-level plan with seamless indoor-outdoor living opens to expansive private grounds and a serene pool-scape.

A home of remarkable restraint. Where design, nature, and history converge.
